With a population of approximately 938,506, Bergen County is considered the most populous county in the state of New Jersey. The county is regarded as one of the wealthiest counties in the United States, with a median household income of almost 18% higher than the median statewide. Bergen County is also known to host an extensive park system of nearly 9,000 acres. The county is believed to be named after one of the earliest settlements, Bergen, which is modern-day Hudson County. Other sources attribute the name to Bergen, Norway, while others attribute it to Bergen, North Holland in the Netherlands.
